New experiential boutique hotel set to debut in Petaluma, California
The Appellation, a luxury hospitality brand co-founded by Christopher Hunsberger and Chef Charlie Palmer, is set to debut its newest 93-room hotel property in Petaluma in 2026. The hotel is aimed at raising the bar for hospitality in the destination while embracing the local culture and history. The brand’s culinary experience is expected to go beyond the 3,125 sq ft of signature food and beverage venues. The hotel's five-storey building will feature a 190-seat street-front restaurant and the only rooftop bar in town, offering views of the Petaluma River.
The hotel's rooftop, courtyard, and hospitality suites will provide 3,000 sq ft of flexible event space that can host multiple private events simultaneously. According to Palmer, Petaluma is an emerging culinary destination in the region and the hotel will offer guests a unique experience compared to other Sonoma County hotels. Hunsberger noted that the brand is committed to building hotels that connect, engage, and serve local communities by spotlighting local makers and craftspeople.
EKN Development Group, the hotel's developer, intentionally designed the hotel to pay homage to the integral role that food and wine play in Petaluma. The hotel will feature specifically commissioned signature pieces from local artists, investing over $500,000 in art that will be accessible to everyone in the community.
EKN Development Group is also developing a dual-branded select-service/extended-stay hotel in Monterey, the Courtyard by Marriott Sand City Monterey Bay, and the Residence Inn by Marriott Sand City Monterey Bay, with 120 and 94 rooms, respectively. Even Hotel Echo Park, an 185-key hotel, is currently taking shape in Los Angeles, while the 150-room Lake Tahoe Alpine Resort is set to arrive in Tahoe City in 2025.
Under Charlie and Christopher's leadership, the hotel aims to highlight local makers and craftspeople as part of its commitment to building hotels that connect, engage and serve local communities. The hotel will also showcase Petaluma's rich arts scene, with over $500,000 invested in art, including specifically commissioned signature pieces from local artists that will be accessible to everyone in the community.
EKN Development Group is also developing a dual-branded select-service/extended-stay hotel in Monterey, California. The Courtyard by Marriott Sand City Monterey Bay will provide 120 keys, with the Residence Inn by Marriott Sand City Monterey Bay section providing an additional 94 rooms. The site is scheduled to be completed in Q4 of 2023.
The developer is also working on the Even Hotel Echo Park, an 185-key hotel in Los Angeles, and the Lake Tahoe Alpine Resort, a 150-room hotel set to open in Tahoe City in 2025. With these properties and the upcoming Appellation Petaluma, EKN Development Group is further establishing itself as a major player in California's hospitality industry.
